War with Mexico Essays - United States, Presidency Of James K. Polk

War with Mexico James K. Polk has declared war with Mexico because of the border dispute . On the border of Texas and Mexico, American troops led by Zachary Taylor were shot on American soil from Mexican troops. James Matthew was one of the witnesses of this incident. All he heard were cries of agony and gunshots as Mexican forces kill innocent men. In Polk's war address to Congress he states, "Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States , has invaded our territory, and shed American blood upon the American soil The two nations are now at war." Kearny led his forces to take over San Pasqual to take over Northern Mexican land. He marched in and he conquered all of Northern Mexico without a single causality. While Kearny had his hands tied up, Scott leads his forces to the port Vera Cruz. After Santa Anna was demoted after losing Texas he then rises back to power as a general. The two sides fought in two battles both leading Santa Anna's forces retreating. Scott then leads his forces to Mexico City. While Scott maybe excited his troops aren't so much, so Scott arouses them with a speech after six months of walking Scott reaches the gates of Mexico City. On September 13 Scott gives the order to fire on Mexico City. On September 14 Scott has taken over Mexico City. In February of 1848 the war is over by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo . Mexico agreed to give the United States all of their Northern Territory for only fifthteen million dollars this became known as the Mexican Cession . The area given to us would be separated into six different states which include: California, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Wyoming. The new border is at the Rio Grande between Mexico and the United States. California After the Eustach party found gold in western California, flocks of families moved west to get the slice of richness. Because of this find a huge epidemic was going around called Gold fever , and the only cure for it was gold. A forty- niner family was granted this title for leaving home in 1849 . The Donner party was one out of the eighty thousand families that were looking for gold. This party was unfortunate because they poorly planned their trip which caused them getting stuck in the Rockies for the winter. Luckily there was a shack they found and decided to wait it all out. After all their food ran out they went down the path of cannibalism when a rescue party found them all they could see was human and dog bones on the floor. They were then led to a mining town in California. All they could see in the mining town was trading posts, a bank, and a medical base. They went to the nearby bank and asked for claim twenty-six because it was a perfect p lace for mining because of the river nearby. Once arriving to their claim after a good night's sleep they started panning for gold. They noticed that the Chinese was also here, and they looked very depressed. People were throwing stones at them, and said things like get of our land Asians." After a hard day's work they found twelve ounces of gold. They then went to the trading post, and they saw Levi Strauss and his denim jeans. He said they're worth six ounces of gold, so they bought a pair and was on their way to a rich future. Inventions Galore The industrial industry is skyrocketing, but the four inventions that changed this the most were the steel tip plow, the telegraph, steam powered factories, and the invention of Morse code . The steel tip plow was invented by John Deere he wanted to be able to build something to plow the tough soil of the prairies versus the soft rich soil of the east coast of the states. He built this in Illinois by trying his first plow which was a saw. The telegraph and Morse code was built by Samuel Morse. The telegraph was built to be able to send electric pulses quicker and longer ranges than the

Issues associated with use of force on inmates Essay

Issues associated with use of force on inmates - Essay Example The law in the country establishes the rights to an inmate. The following are some of the rights. For one, they have the right to trial. This is because not all inmates breach the law. Second, they have the right for treatment with respect. Third, they deem for the right to a legal counsel from a legal representative. Third, they deserve the right to a range of reading materials (Barkan & Bryjak, 2011). Other rights include-right to nutritious meals, to take part in enlightening programmes, and the right to get information of the rules, procedures, and schedules concerning the operation of each detention activity. Further, they have the right to communicate with family members. The reasons why inmates should have the above rights are that they are human beings requiring what others have. Second, some are not necessarily criminals as there are suspects amongst criminal offenders. The punishment on an inmate by personnel is very different from that on a suspect by police. This is due to various distinguishing reasons. Police use force when arresting individuals, and when dispersing demonstrating groups. They do this through pushing the individuals, or using firearms. On the other hand, personnel use force on inmates when they want the inmates to partake a certain job, and when punishing the prisoners. It is a difficult to deal with people of an older age. The police may use certain devices when dealing with people and in different scenes. They use tasers, and stun guns to determine the time a certain shot takes place and aids in dispersing people. They are effective in that the police get to know the time of the shooting. An advantage is that they help astonish assailants at a distance. In addition, the use of tasers is a way of conducting current over longer distances. Several lessons come out from the essay. It is evident that inmates have their rights despite them being lawbreakers. The police and other security personnel should not

The impact of the internet on plagiarism in student papers Annotated Bibliography

The impact of the internet on plagiarism in student papers - Annotated Bibliography Example In the above report, the authors identify the online research behaviors of teenagers in the modern digital world. Among other things, the authors identify the types of information easily obtained by students online. Among the examples given include online encyclopedia, e-books, and news sites among others. This is an extensive research that helps to fully uncover the types of materials available on the internet today used by students. The research is based on an online survey of more than 2400 teachers in the US. The major limitation is that the authors do not focus on how students use these materials to plagiarize. The political scenario in each country is different and must be addressed properly. Marriott has followed protocol designed by the individual nation like; no smoking policy, non-fat food, low calorie diet etc. Economic Environment The growing economy of the Asia and other developing region is motivating Marriott International to invest more in these areas. As the Marriott International has strong brand recognition, it can attract new guest easily with little effort of marketing and promotions. The company can also keep its repeat business because the switching cost or risk for the guest is uncertain. Marriott International is providing quality service consistently and giving the best experience to its guest at all level. Supplier Power The supplier power is moderate for Marriott International as the supplier power in Hospitality Industry is fragmented. Property owners, developers, architects, real estate companies, marketing firms, law firms and information technology service and equipment suppliers are some example of supplier in the industry. Suppliers are in different shapes and sizes. Food and beverage supplier, utility supplier and labor supplier are also key player, as they are major stakeholder in minimizing operational cost of operation. Threat of New Entrants Threat of new Entrants for Marriot International is considerably high due to the substantial growth in hospitality industry in past few years. The unfavorable economic condition of some European countries also have lowered the value of land and real estate and it is very likely to attract new entrepreneur in the hospitality industry. The economic growth in South Asia and Asia Pacific is also maximizing the threat of new entrants. Threat of Substitution Threat of substitution for Marriott International is low in the developed nations and premium market place. In developing nations, the threat of substitution is high due to the innovative concepts in travel and tourism industry like; homestay campaign, camping, informal visit to friends and family. There is a threat of substitution but we cannot compare the service level provided in the informal sector with the Marriott level of service. Degree of Rivalry The threat of rivalry in the hospitality industry is moderate for Marriott International. In hospitality industry, key players are large branded chains. Marriott is facing strong competition from the other same sized chain brands but it is gaining its competitive advantage through the diversification of business in specialized segments. Marriott is expanded in 73 countries and has 18 brands which is the main reason that Marriott is ahead from its competitor. Beside this, Marriotts strong brand equity, strong commitment for guest satisfaction, consistent and quality service is helping Marriott to stay ahead from its rivals. RESOURCES AND CAPABILITIES Marriott International has a strong presence in the hospitality market due to its efficient operation, effective marketing, specific market segmentation by diversification of revenue and economies of scale on operations. Satisfied investor and shareholders, motivated employees in all level, strong corporate culture is driving Marriott International in the right track of its journey to more satisfied guest, motivated employees and prosperous owners and shareholders. DECISION MAKING CRITICAL THEMES CONCLUSION Are you Thirsty? Analysis of Pepsi Advert Are you Thirsty? Analysis of Pepsi Advert Briauna McGrew You wake up in the middle of the night and youre standing in front of your refrigerator with your eyes squinted because of the bright light trying to decide what you want to drink. Then you finally see it, even with your squinted eyes, the exact thing you had been craving since you went to sleep and then dreamed about until the moment you woke up, a Pepsi. So, you grab that glorious Pepsi excited to take a drink and feel the bubbly delicious drink run down your dry throat. Once you take a drink you start to think back to what first got you started drinking this yummy, bubbly, delicious pop. Then you remember the ad that you saw in a magazine that made you laugh out loud so you just had to try the pop. In this ad they used one of Americas famous holidays to get peoples attention and they also made it funny which is something that everyone loves, if someone sees something funny and they are a fun person, more than likely they are going to look into whatever it is that made them laugh, I know I do. When I first looked at this ad the very first thing that I notice is the Pepsi can wearing a Coca-Cola cape. So it is obviously a Pepsi ad trying to get people to drink Pepsi. They are trying to send out a message that Coke is scary and Pepsi is just a normal pop. The only saying on this ad is We wish you a scary Halloween!. This is a big part of them saying that Coke is scary because when you dress up for Halloween you try to be scary, so the Pepsi can is trying to be scary by dressing up as a Coke can. I also got the feeling that when they say We wish you a scary Halloween they are saying that it would be scary if Pepsi turned into Coke When you think of scary things you want to stay away from them, such as shark infested water, if you had to choose between swimming in water that had no living things in it and swimming in water that was infested with sharks I am almost certain you would choose the one with no living things. I think thats what Pepsi is getting at with this ad. Pepsi is a very hip company because they try to appeal to the younger people so they talk their parents into buying it so they can drink it. The colors are key in this ad because if they didnt get the colors just right this could very easily become helpful to Coke and not Pepsi, but because they are professionals at advertisements they used the exact colors needed. In the back ground of the picture are rocks on a hill or a mountain but when you look at it you can see kind of a blue undertone in these rocks, almost like they put a very faint blue tint to the entire picture. If you look at the Coke cape the colors are very dull and aggressive and the shadows on the cape have hints of blue in them which is the main color of a Pepsi can. They made sure that the red on the Pepsi can was a different and more bright red than the red on the Coke cape. They kind of have light coming from the top of the picture and the bottom of the picture so the can just looks so bold. The Pepsi can itself is more bright even though it is under a Coke cape it still pops out. The white on the Pepsi can is a brighter white and the white on the cape is a little more dull. The Pepsi can has some reflecting light on it to make it pop out even more. The top of the Pepsi can has a very bright sun reflection so it makes the can catches the readers eye and makes them look. The whole picture is more of a dark picture but they made sure to make the Pepsi logo very very bright so that it would stand out so that people would know for sure what the ad was for. They made sure to place the sunlight in the perfect place to make the Pepsi can stick out the most. They made the can in general very bold so that your eye is just drawn straight to the can. The colors are very important but the position the can in is important as well. When you look at it it looks like the can is standing tall and is a dominate thing. They make it look like there is a gentle breeze because the Coke cape is open and just looks like it is blowing in the wind, kind of like at the end of a super hero movie when the hero stands on a high mountain top and overlooks the city that he takes care of and they make sure there is a gentle breeze blowing through making their cape blow around and they just look so dominate, thats the feel that I get from this, because they are making this cape blow in the wind it is kind of making the Coca-Cola in this picture a lot less dominate because the word is all wrinkled up and you cant see it as well, you cant see the whole Pepsi word but they have the most important letters of the name in there, the whole name is Pepsi and they have the eps in there so pretty much all of the letters that make up the word Pepi are included, s o people just know what they are looking at. The can is standing right between 2 boulders that kind of make a V or an arrow that kind of points right to the can that also helps with drawing your eyes straight to the can. Also the moss that is throughout the entire picture is isnt a strong point but I can feel the moss kind of guiding your eyes right to the can. To sum everything up, it doesnt seem like this Pepsi ad used a lot of things to try to sell their product but they did. They didnt use a lot of wording but they didnt need to, they kind of came off as a the can speaks for itself kind of thing. They made the colors all hit in the perfect spot and they made all the high lights and low lights perfect. They made the can seem dominate without even saying anything. They made everything in the picture just point straight at the can but they didnt make the pointing too harsh they just kind of slowly guided your eye straight to the can. In my opinion they did an amazing job in this ad just because they didnt use many words but they still got what they wanted to get into everyone that sees this ad head.   So what do you think? Are you going to begin drinking Pepsi? http://www.emlii.com/images/article/2014/02/5300bef02e394.jpeg

Alvarez Shows Language Is A Tremendous Difference In Everyones Lives :: essays research papers

Alvarez Shows Language is A Tremendous Difference In Everyone's Lives In His Story Rudy and Yolanda communicated in completely different languages. By language, I mean the written, and spoken kind. More so I mean the traditions, and values that go hand in hand with learning a language. When they learned their own languages, they inherited their own set of ideals, that were changed by what, where, and how they were taught. Yolanda's language was Spanish. She learned to speak Spanish in the Dominican Republic. Her lifestyle was one of a strict Catholic girl. Yo had a very traditional father. He allowed nothing but what was the social norm. His social norms became hers. When she moved to the U.S., she was completely naive when it came to the American culture. Yolanda was raised in the way that the use of drugs and alcohol were totally unheard of. Pre-marital sex was something that was taboo, and strictly reinforced. She had grown up with very traditional values that were adopted from her mother and her father. She was never exposed to any outside stimuli. Whether or not it was voluntary, she was forced to conform to the rigid Hispanic values. This conformity kept her at bay. She couldn't experience the things necessary to become a whole person.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Rudolf B. Elmhurst was a young man from a liberal family in the United States. His parents were easy-going people, with thoughts of letting Rudy develop on his own. He learned English much the same way Yolanda learned Spanish. He was taught by his parents. He also absorbed the culture around him and he learned the American way of doing things. Rudy had quite a bit of freedom. He could have come and gone as he pleased. He had no restrictions, and was allowed to grow freely. With that opportunity Rudolf Brodermann Elmenhurst was able to laugh along with everyone else at the mention of his difficult to pronounce name. He had been allowed to grow unrestricted, but not unchecked. While his parent were liberal, they still gave him the attention necessary, and the room to evolve. This independence helped him to be who he was, invincible to insult, injury, and always in control.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When Yolanda and Rudy first met they were in English class. He had showed up late and totally unprepared for class, the exact opposite of her. She marveled at how he could walk in late, take what she thought of as an embarrassing scene, and laugh about it. She always went to class early, had all of her books and was well prepared for class.

Hamlet Act Two Essay

Hamlet Act ll An important character in the play Hamlet is Polonius. Polonius is often thought to be foolish, and thoughtless. However, Polonius is anything but foolish, and thoughtless. Polonius is a man who is very intellectual, and he provides guidance to those who need it. For example, his advice to Reynaldo on how to  monitor Laertes’s wild behavior is magnificent and brilliant. His advice to Ophelia  about Hamlet, love, and affection is very accurate. Polonius is considered a fool to some people, because Hamlet is making it seem that way, he wants to put Polonius down, and make Polonius seem like a fool. Hamlet is rude to Polonius, and constantly making fun of him. At one point Hamlet calls Polonius a â€Å"fishmonger†. Hamlet then makes his insult worse by wishing that Polonius were as honest as a fishmonger, which is to say that Polonius is lower than the lowest. Although, Polonius is nothing of the sort, another example of Polonius providing guidance to those who need it is when Laertes is waiting for his ship to depart, Polonius has a couple of minutes to tell  him how to live well. His brief advice is insightful and parental. He tells Laertes to think before  he acts, listen more than talk,  keep good friends close but don’t worry  about drinking buddies. Don’t get in fights, watch your money, and take care of your appearance, things like that. Polonius is the kind to seek to discover the truth on his own. He studies Hamlet to link his madness to love and betrayal. He then seeks to trial his theories by testing Hamlet’s sanity through a slew of inquiring questions. A foolish man does not do this. Perhaps, Polonius was just putting on an act, to make people think that he was foolish and stupid. Regardless of his motives, Polonius cannot be described as a simple character. Polonius has gotten a bad reputation, but further depth into his character reveals that Polonius is indeed a complex character with a great deal of wisdom.

How to Hire the Right Candidate Essays

How to Hire the Right Candidate Essays How to Hire the Right Candidate Essay How to Hire the Right Candidate Essay Abishova Akerke. Article about selecting candidate. Do you select new employees based largely on an attractive resume and the candidate’s performance at the resultant interview? If so, you are missing the opportunity to use additional recruiting and screening methods that will ensure a superior hire. A good looking resume is often professionally prepared, or, at least professionally reviewed. A positive interview leaves all participants excited about the potential new employee. But, do these steps ensure a successful hire? An employee whose performance will exceed your expectations? Not likely. A Chally. com article: The Most Common Hiring Mistakes and How to Prevent Them states, †In a massive study conducted by John and Rhonda Hunter at The University of Michigan on the ‘Validity and Utility of Alternative Predictors of Job Performance, the usefulness of the interview in accurately predicting later success on the job was analyzed. †The surprising finding: The typical interview increases the likelihood of choosing the best candidate by less than 2%. In other words, if you just flipped a coin you would be correct 50% of the time. If you added an interview you would only be right 52% of the time. † This number is not encouraging when you are attempting to recruit and hire a superior work force. So, what will bring you superior hires? You need to start your recruiting process with a planning meeting. FedEx International Aviation Policy Research Paper - 1

FedEx International Aviation Policy - Research Paper Example nies in the world. It has expanded in more than 220 nations. The company has successfully placed itself as a dominant player in the logistics and shipping network. Presently, FedEx possesses strong international consignment network, through which it can rapidly deliver the packages globally. In the international arena, there are many competitors of FedEx who are also striving to achieve the leading position in the logistics and shipping market. Thus, it is essential for FedEx to keep expanding and developing new markets to maintain its position in the market (Smirt & Et. Al., 2007). Competitive One of the biggest competitors of FedEx is UPS (United Parcel Service). UPS is renowned as one of the biggest global courier enterprises. It has a capacity of shipping 15 million packages per day to approximately 6.1 million people in more than 200 nations. Besides UPS the other competitors of FedEx are Japan Post, TNT N.V., Deutsche Post, Royal Mail, India Post, and others. In the domestic ma rket the major competitor of FedEx is USPS (United States Postal Service). FedEx had expanded its business operations in the year 1998 by acquisition of RPS (Roadway Package System) and rebranded it to FedEx Ground in the year 2000. This acquisition had increased the competition in the ground delivery market. To maintain their position, UPS had made partnership with USPS. This affiliation had allowed UPS to pick up mail and deliver to USPS for final distribution (Gomez, 2009). For many years, FedEx and UPS have expanded their business operations. There are little differences in the operation of these two rivals. UPS depends mainly on the ground delivery system and FedEx focuses on air delivery system. FedEx can reach almost every international business destination in less period of time (Anton, 2010). Violence in Schools and Social Development Essay

Violence in Schools and Social Development - Essay Example While many methods have been utilized to address this issue, they generally fall somewhere between the liberal ideals regarding rehabilitation of the perpetrators of violence because they have had a disadvantaged childhood to the conservative approach which advocates punishment and restitution to the victim. Generally speaking, the liberal view supports compassion while the conservative believes strictly in the individual accounting for their actions. Violence in schools is being viewed more and more as not only a social injustice issue for children but also as a public health concern. Violence creates an atmosphere of fear that affects the victims, the offenders and the surrounding public. This cycle of fear and mistrust propagates both antisocial and self-disparaging patterns of behavior. For the offender, studies have concluded that there often is a progression of aggressive and violent behaviors over time. Victims of violence, especially young people, carry with them throughout their lives the emotional scars usually in the form of self-criticism. Those kids that perpetually commit violent acts towards classmates are more likely to use drugs and alcohol, to quit going to school altogether and go on to be involved in criminal behaviour later in life. Children who are often the victims of schoolyard violence tend to experience more stress in their lives which leads to higher levels of anxiety, depression, physical illnesses and thoughts of suicide than those that do not. For both bully and bullied, these actions negatively affect learning potentials and retards personal development. The seemingly never ending cycle of intimidating actions works to tear apart the underpinnings of a civil society from the bottom up. The reason children act out violently towards others is because they have been treated with disrespect or have been bullied themselves. A pattern of poor social adjustment perpetuates itself
